29.08.09 Two young children die in home fire in Germany

On 29 August, two children were killed when an apartment house caught fire overnight in the central German town of Sangerhausen.

Other members of their ethnic Albanian family managed to clamber to safety over a roof behind the building. By the time firefighters reached the burning apartment, the children aged 4 and 9 were dead.

Fire brigades rescued a Serbian family from their apartment in a lower storey of the building.

Several residents were admitted to hospital after signs that they had inhaled toxic fumes from the fire.

The police does not know the cause of the fire so far.
